The Athenaeum is a public library that calls upon the nearby laneways and surrounding geometry to form an intervention into the urban fabric of the site. The intention is to create a space where the open blanketed public realm is playfully interwoven into the private and functional spaces within. Connecting disconnected laneways to form a continuous mode of passage seeks to inspire continuity in the sense of human movement, urban development and socio-cultural significance of the site. Taking inspiration from prominent courtyard schemes from the Sydney and Melbourne Building, the project celebrates the evolving experiences of these inner courts and vestiges and encourages reinvention and reinterpretation of these spaces.
